MDOT ‘Restore I-94’ Construction Project
MDOT ‘Restore I-94’ Construction Project
June 10, 2026
DETROIT – The Michigan Department of Transportation's "Restore I-94" construction project – which extends from Wayne Road to Schaefer Road – is currently in progress. MDOT will refurbish nearly 13 miles of the I-94 corridor, from east of I-275 to west of Michigan Avenue. Scheduled for completion by 2029, this three-year initiative includes pavement replacement, bridge repairs and the construction of a new interchange at Ecorse Road.
During the project, travelers should anticipate lane shifts and temporary closures, including the reduction to two lanes in each direction during peak hours. The work is divided into five segments, beginning with the section from Wayne Road to Middle Belt Road. Impacted areas include Romulus, Taylor, Allen Park, Dearborn Heights, Melvindale and Dearborn.
As of June 8, 2026, lane and ramp closures are in effect at the I-94 and M-39 (Southfield Freeway) interchange.
These closures will be in effect until May 2027:
Eastbound I-94 ramps to Northbound/Southbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway)
Westbound I-94 ramps to Northbound/Southbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway)
Northbound/Southbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway), from I-94 to Outer Drive, has two lanes open with traffic temporarily shifted.
Detours are posted. Drivers may experience increased congestion on local roads as the public adjusts to ramp closures.
The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) recommends that all travelers plan ahead to accommodate potential closures and traffic delays prior to leaving for Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.
