DETROIT (April 20, 2016) - After 33 years, the principal spokesperson for Detroit Metropolitan and Willow Run Airports will no longer be Public Affairs Director, Michael Conway, who retires effective May 1, 2016.
“I can’t begin to describe what an honor and privilege it has been to represent the Airport Authority and work at these extraordinary facilities,” said Conway. “For somebody who loves aviation and has some talent for communicating, this has been an ideal position.”
“The happiest moments were the grand openings of the McNamara and North Terminals,” Conway said. “We went from being nobody’s preferred airport to being a world-wide customer favorite.”
On a personal level, Conway said the high-point of his career was winning the Ted Bushelman Legacy Award for Excellence and Creativity, presented in 2009 at an airport conference in Montreal. It’s the highest honor an airport communications professional in North America can achieve.
Wayne County Airport Authority will not be hiring a replacement for Conway, whose last day will be April 29, 2016.
“The Authority makes succession planning a priority,” said CEO Thomas Naughton. “We knew this was coming and made the appropriate personnel moves in advance.”
“I am going to miss the wonderful people here, especially the Public Affairs Team and our CEO Tom Naughton—the best boss I’ve ever had,” Conway said. “Watching those beautiful wide-body jets gracefully lifting off our runways still gives me a thrill. I have never taken for granted how fortunate I have been.”
